Laurie is Raising $$$$ for a Cure

Thank you so much for visiting my site. I hope that you are able to gain some insight into my latest challenge and are able to help me raise funds to eliminate these blood related cancers.

The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease and Myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

LLS created the Team-in-Training program to raise the funds necessary to significantly accelerate the cures for leukemia and related cancers, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The Society funds over 450 research grantees pursuing the causes and cures for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, and provides financial assistance, support groups, resource directories, and several programs to help patients live fully with these cancers.

In order to achieve this mission, we need people like you to contribute as generously as you can so that more money can be spent on research that will eventually lead to an end to these killer diseases.

What am I doing to contribute?

Having completed my BA and managing to avoid the seemingly normal 60+ hour Silicon Valley work week, I found myself with a bit of spare time and an ever widening silhouette… So, as any dedicated pressure-seeking, moo-moo fearing twenty-something, I am challenging myself to a new commitment. This commitment, however, is not only to myself, but also to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and a close friend. On November 3rd, I began my training to complete the Powerman Alabama Duathlon in Birmingham, Alabama. In order to participate in this event I have committed to raise a minimum of $3500, 76% of which will go directly to the Society.

What is my motivation?

Helping to raise money to support the work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Rising to the physical challenge of an endurance event

Cultivating natural endorphins

Perfecting the art of gracefully wearing those ever snug and oh so flattering cycling shorts

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Why should you help?

An estimated 106,300 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2002. New cases of leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma account for 8.3 percent of the 1,284,900 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 58,300 people in the United States this year. These blood cancers will account for nearly 10.5 percent of the deaths from cancer in 2002 based on the total of 555,500 cancer-related deaths (all sites).

Every nine minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. This statistic represents 160 people each day - seven people every hour. Leukemia and lymphoma are the leading fatal cancers in young men under age 39.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
